i just really want to write a novella about a selkie who is caught and forced into marriage with a man who thinks he is both just and kind, and she hates him, she hates his house, she hates his food, she hates the dry clothes he makes her wear
and they have two daughters, the second five years after the first, and she loves them but she hates them, too
and the older girl figures things out and finds her mother’s skin and gives it back to her because after all, she’s the girl’s mother and the girl loves her mother
and the selkie just cold murders the fuck out of the dude and then peaces out for the ocean
and the two girls have to find their own way in the world
THE END
I don’t know much about it, but this sort of sounds like the new upcoming movie from the “Secret of Kells” creator…. (Though I need to google selkie.)
Hahaha, the trailer for that is part of what triggered this outburst! I CARE A LOT ABOUT SELKIES AND ALSO REVENGE, and I have been writing stories about selkies getting revenge for yeeeeeears on account of how much I hate the dudes in those stories (I don’t care if you ~love~ this girl you literally just saw; you don’t get to STEAL HER MAGIC SKIN and FORCE HER INTO MARRIAGE) and my even greater hatred for the romanticization of the dude-forces-magical-lady-into-marriage story in folklore and SFF fiction. It isn’t romantic; it is gross as fuck.
Anyway, I kind of totally want “Song of the Sea” to end with the selkie ripping out the dude’s throat, but I doubt that’ll happen. WE CAN BUT DREAM.
